First Time Out

Saturday, July 18, 2020 was a day filled with laugher, smiles and an adventure for all. We partnered with Jim (the boat man) with YSR & Korey with The Man Up Club to give some boys a day they would not forget! The adventure began by Jim giving the boys information on what sailing was and a little background on his experience along with his fantastic partners. They discussed the boats themselves and the important safety elements to sailing.

Around 10:00 am, one by one each of the boys from The Man Up Club strapped on their life jackets and stepped onto a sailboat for the first time. They spent the next 2 hours sailing around Lake Nokomis located in Minneapolis. They enjoyed the water, wind, sun and conversations amongst each other and the Captains on each boat.

The sailboats returned to dock at about 12:00 to enjoy lunch and all the chatter about their experience. The smiles were so big and the “I can’t wait to go back out” conversations touched all of our hearts. They talked about how “one of the Captains was going to sail to the Caribbean” and they thought that was amazing!

These young men were such a joy to be around, very polite and thankful. They kept expressing to all of us that volunteered, the many thanks for such a “Great Day”.

Shepherds Works thanks YSR, The Man Up Club and all the fantastic volunteers that made this day special for these young men.
